Weekend Company and AT Hike

We had a good weekend with my friend James. Maybe the last time we will see him before he heads back to Africa in the spring. He will finish up in Atlanta in December and then head back to Texas before returning overseas. He was the winner in a good game of Carcassonne yesterday after church. Today we got up early and headed east to do an 8-mile hike on the AT. It was below freezing when we left, and the hat Lauren knitted me came in handy.

We climbed about 3000 feet over the first four miles (I’ll pay for that tomorrow), occasionally reaching some ridges with nice views.

About a mile and a half from the end is the Wesser Fire Tower, where we all hiked to (from the other end) a couple of weekends ago. It was a nice place to rest, but also quite cool (I don’t think it got out of the 50s today). The highest peak in the background (left of me, right of James) is the highest point in the Smokey Mountain National Park, called Clingman’s Dome.

We met a Thru-Hiker on the trail. He started in Maine on June 15 and had about 140 miles left to go. He said he usually hiked 20 miles a day.

After the hike we encountered a couple of interesting things.

Turkeys

Tractor Crossing?
